Importance of Connection
Dear Friends,
I have been the Executive Assistant at Cultivate Initiatives for almost a year now. Lately, I’ve been honored with the unique opportunity to lend a helping hand as a translator for our Housing & Sheltering team. Beyond the regular scope of my job, I have had the privilege of offering translation support to these neighbors. This resonates with me on a profound level because, like some of the neighbors we assist, I come from an immigrant background.
There's an indescribable sense of fulfillment that comes from being able to alleviate the struggles faced by immigrant neighbors. Witnessing the flood of relief wash over them when they see someone who not only shares their cultural background but also speaks their language is immensely gratifying.
It's a moment that reaffirms the importance of connection and understanding in times of need.
I'm truly touched by the dedication of our housing team in breaking down language barriers. Their commitment to inclusivity is evident in the provision of translators and the translation of essential housing documents.
It's a testament to our unwavering support for every member of our community and ties directly to one of our values, which is our passion to include everyone.
In every interaction, I'm reminded of the significance of empathy and solidarity. To be able to make a positive difference in the lives of others, especially those who share similar experiences to my own, fills me with an overwhelming sense of purpose. I'm immensely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this journey towards greater accessibility and support for everyone in our community.

Geared up for Action!
In February, two of our community partners made some incredibly thoughtful contributions that we just had to share!
Gather:Make:Shelter donated a large box, full to the brim, with Bombas socks! Dry, clean socks can change a person’s day and are vitally important during this cold and wet weather.
Thank you to Gather:Make:Shelter and Bombas for your generosity in helping us to make a difference in our neighbors’ lives.
We also received incredible support from the Rotary Club of the West Columbia Gorge. They facilitated a grant from Rotary International (via our local Rotary district 5100) which was given to our Community Beautification team as part of their efforts to provide workforce development and garbage removal in East Portland and East Multnomah County. This timely grant provided our hard-working team with new safety gear for their job in all kinds of weather conditions.
This gear included;
High-visibility rain ponchos
Tools
Socks
Hand warmers
AND brand-new waterproof work boots from KEEN
We felt honored to receive this grant from Rotary International and our local Rotary District 5100. Their commitment to Community Beautification has gone above and beyond, helping our team with cleaning up in the community.
These are some of the many contributions from our neighbors that make our work possible. We are so thankful for the ongoing outpouring of support from our community.
You’re Invited!
Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.
We are looking forward to a hilarious night of comedy and community listening to four local (and accredited!) Portland comedians. Come join the fun with neighbors on March 15th!
